SDG 9: Resilient infrastructure, inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and innovation

Tourism can contribute to SDG 9 by building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation as well as by fostering innovation. Infrastructure means the facilities and services that are necessary to meet basic needs. This includes access to clean water, electricity, communication – via telephone and internet -, waste recycling but also transportation. As climate change leads to changing weather patterns, like extreme storms and floods, there is an urgent need for resilient infrastructure. ⠀

The sector should take up its role to influence public policy in favour of sustainable infrastructure innovation among other things. This can lead to more resilient and resource-efficient infrastructure with low-carbon emissions. ⠀

Another way to achieve SDG 9 is by providing quality private infrastructure. For example, by implementing eco-design and building techniques, the use of new equipment and technologies in energy and water resources as well as the use of renewable energies. The continuous improvement of equipment and materials for recycling and waste should also be taken into account.
