SDG 8 Example: Asilia Africa

As stated by SDG 8, tourism should promote decent working conditions and inclusive, sustainable economic growth. Our local partner Asilia Africa is a prime example that puts this into practice. 95% of the staff working at one of their camps or operations are locals. In terms of inclusive and diversity management, they make sure that 30 % of their staff are people from rural communities where tourism provides the only viable economic alternative to poaching and subsistence farming.

Furthermore, as they pursue gender equality, they provide specific opportunities for women with the goal to empower women and girls. In total, 35 % of Asilia’s managers are women. They even own one camp in the Serengeti, Dunia Camp, that is the only one in Tanzania that’s operated and run by women only!

They also actively support local communities and its youth by providing primary, secondary and tertiary scholarships with a specific focus on girls. This picture features Angel, the manager of the all-female led Dunia camp that’s owned by Asilia Africa.
