SDG 5 Example: Community Homestay

Community Homestay is one of our local partners in Nepal. They contribute to reaching SDG 5 about achieving gender equality by enabling women and their families in local communities all over Nepal to generate a sustainable livelihood from responsible tourism.

According to the UNWTO and the Sustainable Development Goals, tourism holds the potential to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Tourism can empower women, particularly through the provision of direct jobs and income-generation from micro to medium-sized businesses in tourism and hospitality. Tourism can be a tool for women to become fully engaged and lead in every aspect of society.

Through a community homestay, travellers have the opportunity to stay overnight in a homestay and experience the local culture in an authentic way. Most of the homestay owners are women and housewives. The Community Homestay coaches them in management, hospitality and basic English. Furthermore, women also receive training in how to interact with their foreign guests and exchange their ideas and culture with visitors. This way, they empower women while at the same time encouraging them to preserve their culture and traditions.
