SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

According to the UNWTO and the Sustainable Development Goals, tourism holds the potential to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Tourism can empower women, particularly through the provision of direct jobs and income-generation from micro to medium-sized businesses in tourism and hospitality. Tourism can be a tool for women to become fully engaged and lead in every aspect of society.⠀

Tourism businesses can pay attention to diversity management and adhere to non-discrimination as well as respectful values in staff recruitment and training. They can organise awareness campaigns and collect in-kind donations towards the fight against sex tourism – or any other form of exploitation or harassment – and for human rights.⠀

Furthermore, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council recommends that tourism businesses in a destination provide guidelines for proper visitor behaviour at sensitive sites. Such guidelines are designed to minimize adverse impacts on sensitive sites and strengthen positive visitor behaviours.⠀

When focussing on incoming visitors to a destination, tourism businesses can implement a system to monitor and publicly report visitor satisfaction, and, if necessary, take action to improve visitor satisfaction.⠀
