Our Costa Rican partner Aventuras Tierra Verde shows which actions tourism businesses can take to combat climate change, in line with SDG 13. Costa Rica as a destination aims to be a carbon-neutral country by 2021. Aventuras Tierra Verde contributes to this goal through a strict environmental policy and via the eduction of travellers, staff and the local community.
They have a water and energy management system, based on reducing, re-using and recycling. The protection of natural resources and the reduction of negative impact on flora and fauna is at the core of their business. When selecting accommodation, they prefer hotels that f.e. use renewable energy. In terms of activity, they focus strongly on low-impact activities, such as hiking, biking or horseback riding as opposed to ATV Tours. Their policy serves as the baseline for the development of their trips, transportation, accommodation and the setup of their headquarters.
Furthermore, clients are encouraged to travel by train as opposed to taking domestic flights or to compensate for the carbon footprint of their flight. They also emphasize the fragility of natural settings and the need for travellers to be careful when visiting a natural site to preserve it for future generations.
