On a typical ethical Kilimanjaro climb, you will normally have 3 to 5 porters per climber, depending on your tour operator, group size and amount of equipment included in your package.
With extremely large groups of 20 or more, the ratio can lessen to 2.5 porters per climber. If you’re travelling solo, on the other hand, don’t be surprised to have 6 porters all for yourself. In very high-end packages that include a lot of luxury equipment, you could even have up to 8 porters per climber.
It is possible that the number of porters also varies between companies, even for identical packages, routes and group sizes. This is because some companies carry all the required supplies from the beginning, while others employ so-called re-supply porters to bring fresh food and save porterage costs.
