In the Fair Voyage system, we recognize very specific accommodation categories, and the majority of overnight stays on our trips are in accommodations that do not have an official star rating.
Compensaid (powered by MyClimate) estimate the carbon footprint of accommodations by rating, such as 4 or 5 stars.
To calculate the footprint of our accommodations based on the MyClimate estimates, we are using the following principles:
- By default, we assume a 3 star category and double occupancy for each night if in doubt about the best matching footprint rating equivalent or when the accommodations booked for a specific trip are not specifically recorded in our system. That’s because the majority of nights booked on our trips is typically in a combination of basic to luxurious mobile tented camps (which have the least impact), boutique lodges and eco-resorts. Even when such luxurious accommodations are officially rated or may be considered in the 4 to 6 star category in terms of comfort and exclusivity, they typically have a far lower footprint compared to traditional large-scale hotel accommodations and those typically used for business travel.
- For officially rated accommodations and any of those that we recognize and display as a star-rated equivalent, we use this same star rating. This may be considered a conservative assumption, because star-rated and 5-star equivalent luxurious boutique eco-friendly (or even sustainability certified) accommodations for leisure travel typically have a lower footprint compared to standard business travel hotels or those not sourced according to sustainability criteria.
- For camping, tented camps, and small scale accommodations such as homestays, chalets, or bed & breakfast, we apply a 1 star rating equivalent. This may be considered a conservative assumption, because such accommodations arguably have a lower footprint than even 1 star rated hotels.
