Driving (local transport) impact assumptions

The driving (local transport) footprint calculation has the following input parameters:

  • Distance: In the Fair Voyage system, we recognize the geo locations of each activity and accommodation included in our trips, and are therefore able to calculated the exact distance covered on the ground. When trips us accordingly captured in our system, we are using these exact data points. When unknown we assume an average of 50 km covered per day per group traveling together.
  • Car size: As most of our trips are in remote areas with dirt roads or poor road conditions, they usually required four-wheel off-road capable vehicles. Therefore, we assume “large” car size for all our trips, unless specifically known and recorded otherwise.
  • Fuel: As most of out trips are in mid to lower income regions, we assume “petrol” by default for all our trips, unless specifically known and recorded otherwise.

As there are no good proxies available yet for other types of local transportation, such as ferries or rail, and we assume all local distances are covered by car for the purpose of estimating the carbon footprint of our trips.
